I find it odd how the America responded differently to each of these catastrophes-Hurricane Katrina and Haiti Earthquake. One of the catastrophes was Hurricane Katrina. When this hurricane hit New Orleans many people were shocked of what had happened and what they saw. However, aid to help victims of Hurricane Katrina was slow from our government. It took our government about a month to help the victims, which caused fatalities. People were in need of help, but it was slow, so they died. Although New Orleans is part of the U.S., the rate of help was much slower then the help of Haitain victims.
Haitains have suffered a terrible amount of damage, pain, and deaths, but the answer to help them has come rapidly. As soon as the earthquake happened America, offered a hand. Food supplies, clothing, anti biotics and other much needed supplies were sent as soon as possible. Although, I agree on helping other people/countries, why was the response to aid these two catastrophes? I think that Haitains got help faster because they needed it more then New Orleans, which wasn’t in poverty befor the Hurricane Katrina hit. Also, I don’t remember if there were as many companies trying to help victims of Katrina then there were of the earthquake. I noticed that phone companies planned to raise money by having customers text “Haiti” to some number. When people text “Haiti”, they would donate $10 to help in relief of the fund. Did Phone companies do this for Katrina victims? I agree we should help the less fortunate, but first we should focus on helping our country first.
